GPS devices have been packing full PMP functionality for quite some time now, but few have come up with the bright idea of using an actual, removable PMP for the heart of the unit — although Apple and TomTom are now doing their best attempt at a one-two punch. Korean manufacturer APSI now made its best attempt at a fully out-of-the-box solution with its new APSI 100 unit, however, which combines the simplicity of a touchscreen PMP with the in-car convenience of some old fashioned buttons and knobs. Unfortunately, the complete specs are a bit hard to decipher, but it looks like you will get some built-in DMB mobile TV (complete with an antenna jack on the base unit), along with some nifty 3D maps, and both AV inputs and outputs, among other standard fare. No word on a price, unfortunately, and it looks like this one is, and will likely remain, a Korean exclusive.

Brushed aluminum exterior filed down to a minimalist 13mm in thickness with rubber-padded sides for impact protection. This is not just a portable hard drive, this is an LG XD3 Slim portable hard drive. It seems like LG has decided to differentiate its products on aesthetics alone, as the XD3 has the same USB and SATA II connectivity that have been on offer since the XD1, and storage is no greater than the max 500GB on the XD2. Even so, if the Korean price of 110,000 Won ($90) for the 320GB model shows up unaltered in Western lands, we know what we’ll be buying our imaginary girlfriends come Christmas.

Let’s be honest: the standout feature of the WizPlat NAS-20 is its boxed-lunch design. Otherwise, it’s a pretty standard network attached storage device offering Gigabit ethernet, up to 4TB (2TB per 3.5-inch bay) in RAID 0/1 or JBOD configs, 2x USB for more storage, FTP, SAMBA, iTunes, and printer servers, and integrated BitTorrent client for 24/7 PC-less downloads. Unfortunately the design, while portable, pretty much eliminates any hope of constructing a stacked monument to copyright infringement.

Digital Cube may not be a household name in portable media players (at least on this side of the Atlantic), but there’s no doubt that its latest attempt at greatness is a real looker. The touchscreen-based i-Station E9 arrives with an expansive 3-inch panel, hardly any buttons to speak of, an FM tuner, accelerometer, video output, support for more formats than you can shake a stick at and a user interface that looks particularly fascinating. Battery life is pegged at just 12 hours for audio and 4 hours for video, but with prices set for $115 (4GB) / $132 (8GB), we won’t kvetch too loudly.

We’re still waiting for word of an official release over here, but that hasn’t stopped the Mintpass Mintpad from winding its way to the US direct from Korea, and one of ‘em has now wound up in the hands of the folks at Pocketables, who have promptly done a proper unboxing. In case you missed some of the earlier hands-on videos, perhaps the most striking thing about this one is just how tiny it really is (head on past the break for a comparison shot), although Pocketables says that it’s well built and “makes a positive first impression when held in the hand,” even if the bezel is apparently a bit chunky. They were also impressed by the accessories available out of the gate, including a stylish silicone sleeve, a screen protector, and a handy cradle, which you can also check out by hitting up the link below.

It’s hard to beat the chrome and titanium black versions of the Cowon S9 players in terms of aesthetic design. And black is always the best choice to frame its high-contrasting, 3.3-inch AMOLED if you’re the type who likes to see the display fade into the device during particularly dark video sequences. Still, choice is good, and white DAPs are trending (again) so why not ceramic white? It’s not like the S9’s viewable display actually stretches end-to-end like you might assume.

The already crowded PMP space just got a little more busy thanks to a trio of new portable players from iMuz. Starting with the smallest, we have the above-pictured 39,000KRW ($31) 2GB and 49,000KRW ($40) 4GB MX1, which goes nicely with creepy looking dolls and sports a 1.5-inch TFT LCD, video playback of .avi files, FM radio, a voice recorder, and the ability to read e-books (if you really hate your eyes). Next up is the MX5, a brief video tour of which is included after the break. It has a 3-inch, 240 x 400 LCD, 16GB of storage, TV output, and all the same functionality as the baby MX1. Finally comes the MU-959, featuring VibeTouch haptic feedback. It too has a 3-inch, 240 x 400 LCD, but sports a dual-core processor, enabling it to decode a flurry of video formats and play games in addition to the standard voice recording, e-book reading, and FM tuning stuff. It comes in three colors: pink, black, and luxury brown. At this point we don’t have a price to pass along for either of the two proper-sized ones, but it’s not likely that you’ll stumble across any of the trio in a domestic retailer anyhow.

We know what you’re thinking, and no, we also have not a clue what Royche was thinking when it designed the RAPOO 3800. The wireless mouse, which ships in black or white along with a “nub” style USB dongle, lays completely flat and boasts what appears to be a few multimedia keys below a totally-too-small scroll wheel. We get that the space constrained traveler may be fond of the approach, but our ergonomics instructor is screaming bloody murder here in the corner. Mouse at your own risk, kids.

Averatec probably isn’t the first name that pops into your head when you think of cleanly designed thin laptops, but if the $800 N3400 is any indication of things to come, that could change. Laptop had a chance to review the 13-inch machine and found its slim, aluminum body compares favorably to the MacBook Air — despite being nearly a full inch thick. The 1,280 x 800 glossy display was rated as “decent,” the dual-core 2.16GHz Intel T3400 processor paired with 3GB of RAM gave very good performance, but unplugged longevity was where it all went wrong. Just over three hours was the mark this machine achieved and, while the battery is replaceable, a screwdriver is required to do the deed, meaning it probably isn’t an operation you want to attempt whilst sitting in coach. So, if you need a powerful ultraportable that won’t break the bank, this looks to be it — so long as you aren’t planning any long trips.

12 hours. That, according to LG, is the new benchmark by which all wannabe long-lasting laptops will have to measure up. Of course, we’ve seen similar aftermarket solutions before, but it’s good to see a manufacturer stick a flag in the ground — and a big rump on the back — in the race for the highest endurance netbook. And boy is the X130 a netbook: 1024 x 600 resolution, 10-inch screen and the predictable Atom N270 et al. Koreans can grab one now for 789,000 Won ($639), with almost worldwide availability to follow shortly. Check out our review of the X120 for a flavor of LG’s history in the market, while we go look for actual benchmarks undermining that legendary battery life claim.
